RESEARCH INTERESTS:

  • Phylogeny, diversity (estimating by morphological and molecular methods), development of epibenthic and symbiotic Copepoda associated with marine algae and invertebrates (bryozoans, cnidarians, echinoderms, sponges etc). Origin and evolution of the order Siphonostomatoida, historical and zoogeographical relationships of this order with other orders of copepods are the most intriguing questions for me.
  • Diversity and ecology of Copepoda (Calanoida, Cyclopoida, Harpacticoida, Mormonilloida, Misophrioida and Siphonostomatoida) from deep-sea hydrothermal vents and cold seeps.

Habitus of a deep sea hydrothermal vent copepod of the family Dirivultidae

Habitat of dirivultids on the MAR  (MARUM© 2005, University of Bremen).

  • Patterns of limb development in different orders of copepods and other groups of crustaceans. Understanding the patterns of limb development in major groups of copepods, as well as other crustaceans, is necessary to interpret homologies of limb segments and to test hypotheses about copepod evolution and relationships of copepods with other crustaceans.
  • Cleaning symbiosis of coral fishes and shallow water invertebrates.
  • DNA-barcoding.
